From paving to preservation and maintenance crews, everyone in our industry understands the importance of properly lighting up the work area both for the traveling public as well as for workers and work vehicles.
Here are five types of lights you should have on your paving or pavement maintenance jobs:
- Hazard/warning lights: Typically, SAE Class 2 warning lights are used for construction vehicles that work along roadsides. Incorporate strobe lights in hideaway areas such as in headlamp, tail, turn or back-up lamps that do not require additional mounting. You can also add beacons or bar strobes.
- Ground lighting: It’s crucial to have good ground lighting, so the vehicle can safely navigate obstacles. All ground lights should be mounted below the vehicle shining downward, typically at a –40 degree angle.
- Scene lighting: Scene lighting is used when high-powered, long-range illumination is required from a construction vehicle, and usually takes the form of work lamps.
- Surface lighting: Surface lighting is called for when workers require safe footing up steps or quick access to construction tools, equipment, and materials in compartments, truck beds, and cargo areas. This might include mounting lights in these places or the use of LED light strips.
- Personal lighting: Over the past few years, wearable lights affixed to hard hats have made hands-free illumination of immediate task areas and walking paths possible. These lights come in a variety of styles and lumens to suit the job at hand.
With these five types of lighting on your project, you can make the job site safer and more productive for the crew.
