Tire Pressure Influences More Than Fuel Efficiency

Your crew can help you monitor and control maintenance costs if they’re watching tire pressure. Think about equipment from MTVs to quarry trucks in addition to the haul trucks delivering mix. The equipment with inflatable tires gets a better return on its investment when you take care of its tires, as well as its electronics and other moving parts.

What’s a good way for the operator on the crew to take care of the tires? Inflation.

​If the tires aren’t inflated to the correct pressure, tire wear is accelerated. Fuel efficiency drops. The tread can be damaged. And, in some cases, you mess with quality control of your project. For example, if the MTV’s tires are low, its discharge conveyor will rest against the paver’s hopper insert, causing downward pressure on the front of the tractor, which in turn affects paving quality.

The point: you want to check on the OEM’s recommended tire pressure and maintain that as part of proper tire—thus proper equipment—maintenance.
