Because our tip last week focused on preparing a surface for pavement maintenance, we should talk about preparing the work zone for these repairs. This type of quick job has historically—and sometimes tragically—gone under the radar when it comes to work zone setup. At times of the day when traffic congestion is down or when a crew is on a back road with minimal traffic, pavement maintenance or repair crews might be tempted to hop out of the work truck and fill a pothole without proper work zone setup. Such a lapse in proper MUTCD guidelines could result in tragedy.
During your tailgate meeting this week, make sure you stress the importance of setting up a clearly delineated work zone for all pavement repair jobs. No matter the size, the job can result in a worker’s death if it isn’t executed properly. Be safe out there with personal protective gear and with common sense.
We’ll not have a toolbox tip next week in observance of the holiday. AsphaltPro Magazine staff wishes everyone a lovely, peaceful and safe Easter week. We look forward to sharing more paving and production information with you when we return to the tips April 27.
