Prep for Stack Testing: Let’s Start with Baghouse, Dust Return

To begin the year, the Toolbox Tip series from AsphaltPro Magazine kicks off with a new set of production-related talks to help prep the system for stack testing. With emissions reduction all the rage, you’ve probably already installed advanced technologies for ensuring your lowest possible impact on the environment. Now let’s look at ways to ensure those new technologies are functioning at optimum levels. Namely, let’s look at how to keep the air clean.

One of your goals is to prevent dust from escaping the production circuit. You’ll want to double-check ductwork and seals to ensure you have no leaks or weak points between components. Also schedule your baghouse for routine maintenance while you have downtime. Bags that are clean and in good repair do a better job of collecting dust than caked and clogged bags—no matter what type of bag/filter media you’re working with—so let this step be a priority.

Getting the baghouse, ductwork, mineral filler silo piping and ductwork, and other dust conveyance componentry sealed and set for leak-free production is important not just to maintain a clean system, but also to monitor and meter dust correctly during production. Don’t overlook a worn or rusted area in the system during this season’s downtime. Get after those worn spots and make sure your dust return is ready for perfect operation at season startup and stack testing.
