No one wants to think about a natural disaster or accident affecting their hot-mix facility, but everyone needs to be prepared for the unexpected. Being prepared is what gives your team members their best chance at surviving an emergency or getting away from a terrible situation unharmed.
Make sure the employees at your asphalt plant know all appropriate exit routes. Your safety team should designate an area nearby, offsite, where everyone will assemble in the event you must evacuate the plant. Not only your employees, but visiting vendors need to know about these exit routes and the assembly area.
Each member of your team will clock in at the beginning of his or her shift. Each truck driver who brings millings to the plant must also “check in” as he drives onto your property. Each subcontracted vendor needs to be tracked and monitored for safety. With RFID tags and the oodles of tracking apps available to the marketplace today, there are plenty of options for keeping tabs on people for their safety.
Now, while most hot-mix plants are down for seasonal maintenance, designate a safety team member who will be in charge of double-checking each of those persons has made it to the assembly area in the event of an emergency. Assign a point person to monitor the RFID tags or tracking app(s) to ensure everyone who entered the plant’s geofence makes it to the assembly area safely.
As you prepare for 2022’s anticipated busy second half, prepare for the unexpected as well.
