Gather the skeleton crew together for a safety talk before each maintenance shift. You may have fewer employees around the plant at this time of year, and the absence of round-robin haul trucks may lessen the opportunity for specific types of injury at the plant, but cold weather and a potential lack of oversight introduce different dangers to your workers.
Don’t let complacency sneak into the operation. Remember to wear appropriate fall protection when you’re more than six feet off the ground. Anchor your fall-arrest gear to a solid, strong structure. Make sure your fall-arrest system’s connectors are compatible with one another. Don’t wear an ill-fitting body harness; get one that fits properly and can do its job. Use the appropriate line for the application: a shock-absorbing lanyard is different than a deceleration device, which is different than a retractable lifeline. Select the one that will safeguard you best.
