By this point in your career, you probably know how to throw mix into a pothole. If you have an area of excessive alligator cracking, you know how to cut out, clean, tack and fill the area. Utility cuts? You’ve got it. Now who have you put on the small tandem roller or the plate compactor to get the patch sealed properly?
For today’s quick tip, let’s talk about pinching the edges first. If the new guy hops on the tandem and rolls toward the middle of the cut, stop him. He should be taught to roll the edges of the cut—or the edge of the patch—first. Seal the edges and then roll down the center, pressing the hot material into the confined edge.
And don’t forget the use of water on the plate compactor and the roller’s drums. Keep it lubricated to prevent picking up the mix you just laid.
