Natural disasters, civil unrest, and accidents are those things we don’t like to talk about. But being prepared for something catastrophic gives your team members their best chance at surviving an emergency. Hopefully unharmed.
You want to be sure all employees—and visitors—at your asphalt plant know all appropriate exit routes. Your safety team should designate an area nearby, offsite, where everyone will assemble in the event you must evacuate.
Just as each member of your team clocks in at the beginning of their shift, make sure each truck driver who brings millings or arrives for mix also checks in as he drives onto your property. Each subcontracted vendor needs to be tracked and monitored for safety. With RFID tags and tracking apps available today, there are many options for keeping tabs on people and equipment for their safety.
Designate a safety team member who will be responsible for double-checking each of those persons has made it to the assembly area in the event of an emergency. Assign a point person to monitor the RFID tags (or tracking apps) to ensure everyone who entered the plant’s geofence makes it to the assembly area safely.
As you visit safety-related vendors at CONEXPO-CON/AGG this week, or as you learn of updates on safety items from the AsphaltPro Show Daily email throughout the week, prepare for the unexpected. If you have a safety director who should receive this week’s message, please forward it to them. And if you’re on your way to Vegas, the AsphaltPro Magazine staff looks forward to seeing you there. Stop by our booth GL30901 to talk asphalt. Pick up a sheet of stickers while you’re there. Grab our asphalt-centric map for the show. And review the Ask the Expert schedule so you can visit with the expert of interest to you!
