Cat Gensets Drive Four-Gigawatt Data Power Deal in Utah

As the demand for AI-ready data infrastructure surges, the backbone of those operations still comes down to a reliable power source—and Caterpillar is stepping up to meet that need.
A new partnership between Joule Capital Partners, Caterpillar Inc., and Wheeler Machinery Co. will deploy a fleet of Cat G3520K generator sets to power what’s expected to be the largest single data center campus in Utah. The agreement supports Joule’s high-performance compute data center with four gigawatts of energy capacity and a fully integrated Combined Cooling Heat and Power (CCHP) system.
Each of the Cat G3520K gensets at the heart of the project is designed to deliver prime power while capturing and repurposing waste heat to cool next-generation, high-density server systems. The gensets will work in tandem with over a gigawatt hour of battery energy storage to provide grid-forming, distributed energy with minimal latency—an essential requirement for AI-driven computing.
“This project represents the core of Joule’s mission—to deliver artificial intelligence (AI) ready compute capacity by pairing world-class data center campuses with reliable, on-demand power,” said David Gray, President of Joule Capital Partners. “By combining Caterpillar’s advanced energy systems with Wheeler’s local expertise, we can bring gigawatt-scale capacity to market faster and more efficiently than ever before.”
Caterpillar’s latest systems give Joule a speed-to-power advantage, thanks to their domestic manufacturing capabilities and packaged power solutions. Beyond the gensets themselves, the complete power system includes switchgear, inverters, controls, and energy storage—all serviced and supported by Wheeler.
“Caterpillar is uniquely positioned to tackle the growing energy needs for artificial intelligence and the evolving needs of modern infrastructure,” said Melissa Busen, senior vice president of Electric Power at Caterpillar. “This project is a perfect example of how we can deliver fast, reliable power generation to our customers through integrated energy solutions.”
Bryan Campbell, CEO of Wheeler Machinery Co., echoed that sentiment: “This strategic alliance between Joule, Caterpillar, and Wheeler brings together world-class engineering, local expertise, and visionary energy design. We’re proud to help deliver a resilient solution ready to meet future compute demands and set a new standard for data center infrastructure.”
Set across 4,000 acres in Central Utah, Joule’s data center campus is scheduled to launch with gigawatt capacity in 2026. The integrated power system is purpose-built for the next generation of artificial intelligence and data-intensive applications—making genset performance and uptime more critical than ever.
