For our paving tips this month, let’s look at the back of the paver for a minute. One of the back-to-basic tips for your crew is to balance the screed when paving “wide.”
If you have an 8-foot-wide screed and a 10-foot-wide lane to pull, the goal is to set down in the middle of the lane with 1 foot of extension on each side of the screed. Balance. This assists in moving the head of material down the augers to the extensions equally and assists in the weight of the screed and so on.
Sure, you’ll have moments in your paving life when you’ll have to extend one side a bit more than the other to catch a flare or round a curve and so on, but the rule of thumb for best paving is to keep the screed balanced.
