How to Ensure a Clean Milling Pattern from Day One
BY AsphaltPro Staff
When we think of milling, we think of the pattern left behind the cold planer. A clean, consistent pattern is a goal that starts with a clean, smooth start. Experts from Bomag, CAT, Roadtec, Wirtgen and so on agree: a smooth morning start-up of the mill begins with proper maintenance the evening before.
Train your mill operator to check and change the cutting tools while he’s washing dust and debris away. Make sure he has the OEM’s info for greasing bearings, etc.
When morning comes, the mill operator starts the day with the walk-around inspection. Your company will have an inspection sheet, an app or a tablet connected “electronically” to RFID tags on the machine. Make sure it includes these items:
- Check for hydraulic or oil leaks
- Check for any damage to the machine/conveyors
- Check the milling teeth/tools for any you missed last night
- Check for any missing/damaged teeth from the lowboy loading/offloading
- Check your safety items like lights, decals, reflective tape, alarms, cameras, etc.
- Top off fluids
Your company will have additional points to cover, but these remind operators to take ownership of the equipment prior to the start of the shift.
Next week, our tip will look at logistics for a pattern of milling success.
