Make Accurate Pavement Maintance Measurements with Leica BLK3D
BY AsphaltPro Staff
The Leica BLK3D can be used to document and take measurements of damaged assets as a JPG, PDF, or a 3D measurable image through BLK3D Web or BIM 360.
The BLK3D was designed with the AEC (architecture, engineering and construction) market in mind, said Michael Liberati, Leica BLK3D’s Business Development Manager. “In day-to-day use, contractors can easily carry the BLK3D with them for quick measurement and documentation to digitize and replace tape measures.”
For major projects in heavy construction, he added, there are better-suited laser scanning and total station solutions. AsphaltPro discusses some of these options in our recent article, “Superior Bowen Prevents Problems with PlanGrid” in our March 2020 issue.
“This technology provides almost instant information, enabling crews to forgo the need to shut down traffic lanes and keeping them out of risky situations to make measurements,” said Kelly Steeves, Leica’s paving sales manager.
In addition to keeping crews safer, taking measurements with the BLK3D saves time and money preparing estimates with more accurate measurements, she added.
Once the work is done, the contractor can photograph the repair and prove exactly what was done, quantity of material used for the repair, and keep this as a permanent, measurable record of their asset.
“We are in the infancy of the adoption of this type of device, and we are open to growth in all types of segments, with a keen focus on heavy construction,” said Steves, who is currently trialing the BLK3D on various paving sites. “As the first of its kind instrument, there is a certain level of proof we see professionals in the field expecting, and we believe that will soon be established as its all-in-one capabilities to capture, measure and process on one device are experienced onsite.”
