Owner of Iron Horse Asphalt and August’s Woman of Asphalt, Alisha Hatch, shared her Top 5 Tips for sweeper operators to perform well and increase the likelihood of getting full pay on parking lot jobs and other commercial projects. You can read more about her and her company in our Women of Asphalt series. And you can learn from her experience in the field right here.
While Hatch has turned the sweeper operation over to her workers for the most part these days, she has experience in the cab herself. The company performs mostly parking lot sweeping. Here are her tips:
- It’s all in the details. “Customers love to see even the smallest effort into the back corners or under the cart corrals.”
- Personal interaction. “Managers love to know you’re committed, talking to them goes a long way.”
- Quit the short cuts! “Leaf blowing the curb lines takes a few extra minutes but saves time in the end trying to chase things or breaking the machine by getting too close to something you shouldn’t.
- “A clean truck always equals a clean parking lot. Take pride in keeping your sweeper truck tidy.”
- Enjoy it! “The quietness of operating the sweeper in the late nights or early mornings was something I enjoyed.”
Whether your crew is sweeping the lot prior to a pavement preservation treatment or for regular parking lot maintenance, best practices win the day. You can take pride in a job well done and get full pay if a surface is properly swept.
