Volvo CE Displays DD128C Double Drum Compactor
BY AsphaltPro Staff

On display at the Volvo Construction Equipment booth at World of Asphalt/Agg1 2022 was its DD128C double drum compactor. The 12-ton machine is designed to perform in both traditional paving applications as well as thin lifts, offering eight amplitudes with auto-reversing eccentrics. The DD128C is also equipped with Volvo CE’s Ultra-Pac technology, which automatically sets the highest possible vibration frequency (up to 4,800 vpm) according to the selected amplitude. According to the manufacturer, this enables operators to roll faster while maintaining optimum impact spacing.
Although Volvo CE’s other machines of this size also offer eight amplitudes, they have fixed vibration frequency. Additionally, the DD128C’s amplitude range of from 0.003 to 0.030 inches is the company’s widest amplitude range. Setting three on the DD128C is similar to setting one on the DD120C, while setting eight on the DD128C is slightly higher than the highest setting on the DD120C.
The DD128C also offers a series of intelligent compaction functions, accessible via Volvo Co-Pilot, a 10-inch in-cab display. The compactor also comes factory-fitted with the necessary wiring to upgrade intelligent compaction packages in the field: Compact Assist Start with pass count mapping and temperature mapping; Compact Assist with all the features of Compact Assist Start, plus high accuracy location, data recording and Real Time Kinematic (RTK) compatibility; and Compact Assist with Density Direct with all the features of Compact Assist plus compaction measurement, including Compaction Measurement Value (CMV) mapping and Density Direct mapping.
Volvo CE’s DD128C also offers a fully redundant water system and ergonomic features including a five-position 180-degree rotating console with reclining seat and clear sight to the drum edges and spray bars.
