Asphalt Wins from ABC Gala

Associated Builders and Contractors announced the winners of the National Excellence in Construction® Awards—86 construction projects worth nearly $6 billion—at the 36th annual EIC Awards Gala during ABC Convention 2026 in Salt Lake City on March 19. Winners of the EIC Innovation, Design-Build, Greener Tomorrow and Productivity awards were also announced.

The EIC Awards celebrate the best in merit shop construction, honoring the most outstanding projects from 2025, including relocation of schools; renovations to convention centers, courthouses and beach resorts; and construction of science parks, apartments and hospitals, as well as honoring contractors for their remarkable achievements in leadership, health and safety, innovation and merit.

The EIC Awards honor each member of the construction team, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. The winning projects are judged on complexity, unique challenges overcome, completion time, innovation and safety. Pyramid Winners in General Contractors

In the category of Federal Government/Military up to $15 million, CMS Corporation, Maumee, Ohio, won for the repair of All American Landing Zone (AALZ) Drainage and Pavement at the Camp Robinson Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas. Camp Robinson, a 33,000-acre Army National Guard training facility, is the headquarters of the Arkansas National Guard and one of the largest state-operated training sites in the United States. The AALZ is located approx. 7 miles west of the installation, within the north-central portion of Camp Robinson. Little Rock AFB airmen conduct both airdrops and air landings at the AALZ.

CMS Corporation (CMS) announced in July 2022 it had been awarded the $12.6 million project under its prime contract with the Air Force under its $2.5B Regional Engineering and Construction (RE&C) program. Under this contract, CMS oversaw the full-depth repair of the east, west and parallel taxiways, demolition of taxiway lighting, re-grading the landing zone to improve storm drainage, and installation of a storm drain under the existing drop zone service road.

Another key part of the project was to construct a new deer fence around the airfield perimeter (over 17,000 linear feet) to prevent wildlife intrusion, build new service roads around the deer fence, install new storm drain under the fence and service road, and construct new service roads in the drop zone.

In the category of Infrastructure: Heavy $100 to $250 million, Allan Meyers won for the I-95 Express Toll Lanes: MD152 Interchange Reconstruction in Harford County, Maryland. From fall 2021 to fall 2024, the joint venture partnership of Wagman Heavy Civil, Inc., and Allan Meyers MD, Inc., executed the MD 152 Interchange Reconstruction, which was a $196 million project for the Maryland Transportation Authority. It is part of MTA’s $1.1 billion program to relieve congestion and improve travel along the I-95 corridor.

The joint venture included a full interchange reconstruction, replacing the MD 152 bridge to accommodate two Express Toll Lanes (ETLs) and four general purpose lanes in each direction. Other improvements included signage, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), stormwater management and landscaping. While the project incorporates asphalt lanes, the Wagman website also pointed out the use of a light-weight fill being used in large embankment areas. “This product, foamed glass aggregate, is made from recycled glass and is 70% lighter than common borrow.”
