Guide Dump Trucks with Light
BY John Ball
If the haul truck driver doesn’t know exactly what he’s doing, he might back the truck toward the paver on a dusky or dark paving job, but end up off-center. One way to direct him is to have the dump man shout and yell and wave his arms around. The better way to direct the truck driver is with lights on the sides of the hopper.
This crew has put magnetic bars of orange lights on each side of the hopper. The lights guide truck drivers to the outline of the hopper. As you can see in this picture, the lights run off the battery of the tractor, which the black wire connects them to.
