It’s that time of year again to hurry up and get through projects so they’re finished before snow flies. But being in a hurry too often brings little mistakes that bring you back next spring to fix problems—for free. Here are some tips from About Asphalt’s Ben Everett to keep the paving crew focused on the start-off details that keep mistakes at bay.
- Start with temperature. Make sure the screed is at the proper temperature to place asphalt. A cold screed will dive at take-off and leave you with a problem to solve right off the bat.
- Take the time to get your settings right. Check your screed extender match height and slope, and the main screed crown and extender angle of attack relative to the main screed. Also set your screed width so it’s balanced—you want each extender out the same amount on both sides.
