You’re probably in hiring mode for the upcoming season. Asphalt Pavement Specialists’ Bill Stanley offered his ideas for bringing new workers on board who have staying power. One of the ways he knows a new hire is “a keeper” is when the guy is showing common sense situational awareness.
In his February Street Smarts article, he talked about the worker who doesn’t just see a tool lying on the ground, but moves the tool before it gets run over by a work truck or a piece of equipment. That’s the kind of worker you want to invest time and training in. It sounds simplistic, but if you have someone on the crew that you have to watch like a hawk so you can direct their every move, that someone is going to be difficult to train on the nuances of asphalt paving.
Workforce development recognition is on tap during CONEXPO-CON/AGG. Forward this week’s tip to your HR department, hiring manager, or other relevant folks and make sure everyone knows to come to the Reliable Asphalt Products booth C32804 at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 4, for the Workforce Development Signing Ceremony with AsphaltPro Magazine and Rogers Group Inc.
